Should you convert JFIF to BMP?

Worth it when an app or an editor needs BMP, or before you edit the picture several times. BMP won’t restore the detail JFIF already threw away, and the file will be larger, but nothing more is lost from here on.

BMP is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens almost everywhere, while JFIF is has patchy support.

JFIF is an ordinary JPEG photo that carries the .jfif extension; BMP is an uncompressed grid of pixels. Use BMP only when a specific piece of software, a printer or an embedded device asks for it.

How to convert JFIF to BMP

What changes when JFIF becomes BMP

BMP can’t add back what JFIF removed

The JFIF was compressed when it was saved, and that detail is gone. BMP records exactly what the JFIF contains now, compression marks included, and keeps it that way however often you edit and re-save.

Expect a much larger file

BMP is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs BMP, not to send or store the file. JFIF: The same size as the equivalent JPG. BMP: A 12-megapixel image is about 36 MB.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

  • About the JFIF. People assume a .jfif file is a special format. It is a normal JPEG; the only real problem is forms that look at the extension and say no.
  • About the BMP. BMP looks like a safe “raw” choice, but a single photo can run to tens of megabytes and most sites refuse it.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting JFIF to BMP lose quality?

No further quality is lost: BMP keeps exactly what is in the JFIF. It can’t undo compression the JFIF already has.

Will the BMP be smaller than the JFIF?
