Should you convert JPG to PNG?

You need a lossless copy for editing, a format a design tool demands, or you’re about to add transparency around a product shot or signature.

Worth it when an app or an editor needs PNG, or before you edit the picture several times. PNG won’t restore the detail JPG already threw away, and the file will be larger, but nothing more is lost from here on.

JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files; PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency. Use PNG for screenshots, interface graphics, logos and anything with transparency or lettering, and as the working copy of an image you are still editing.

What changes when JPG becomes PNG

PNG can’t add back what JPG removed

The JPG was compressed when it was saved, and that detail is gone. PNG records exactly what the JPG contains now, compression marks included, and keeps it that way however often you edit and re-save.

Expect a much larger file

PNG is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs PNG, not to send or store the file. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. PNG: A 12-megapixel photo is often 12–20 MB; a screenshot is usually 100 KB–1 MB.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • About the PNG. Photographs saved as PNG balloon in size. A holiday photo that is 3 MB as JPG can be 15 MB as PNG, because lossless compression can do very little with the fine grain of a real photograph.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting JPG to PNG make my photo sharper?

No. PNG stores exactly what the JPG already contains, including its compression artefacts. What PNG does is stop further quality loss when you edit and re-save.

Will converting JPG to PNG lose quality?

No further quality is lost: PNG keeps exactly what is in the JPG. It can’t undo compression the JPG already has.

Will the PNG be smaller than the JPG?
