Platform sizes
Link preview (Open Graph) image size

The short answer
Make link-preview images 1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1). That one size works on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp and iMessage. Facebook accepts from 200 × 200 up to 8 MB; keeping it under 1 MB makes previews appear faster.
og:image
| Recommended og:image | 1200 × 630 px (1.91:1) |
|---|---|
| Smallest Facebook accepts | 200 × 200 px |
| Largest file Facebook accepts | 8 MB |
| 1200 × 627 px (the same shape) |
The tags that make it show
A preview image is set in the page’s head with og:image, plus og:image:width and og:image:height so the image shows the first time a link is shared rather than after it has been fetched. Use an absolute URL. X shows the large card only when twitter:card is set to summary_large_image; without it, it shows a small square.
Platforms cache previews. After changing an image, re-scrape the page in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector, or the old image keeps appearing.
Questions
What size should an og:image be?
1200 × 630 pixels. It’s large enough for high-resolution screens and the right shape for every major platform’s large preview.
Why does my link show the wrong image?
The platform cached the old one. Re-scrape the page with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector.
Why is my X preview small?
The page is missing twitter:card set to summary_large_image, or the image is smaller than X’s large-card minimum.
