    Pick the format and bitrate. 192 kbps suits music, 128 kbps suits speech; FLAC, WAV and AIFF are lossless.

Why it doesn’t upload

Recordings are often private: interviews, voice notes, unreleased music. Your browser can decode and encode audio itself, so there is no reason to send it anywhere.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, Opus and FLAC are converted by your browser directly. WMA, AMR, APE, AC3 and the other specialist formats use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
  • Converting a lossy file such as MP3 to a lossless format such as FLAC makes it bigger, not better. It is useful only when an app demands that format.
  • Surround audio is mixed down to stereo, except when converting to AC3.
  • Song titles, artist and cover art are not carried across yet.

Questions

Which audio format should I use?

MP3 when it has to play on anything. M4A (AAC) for iPhones and Apple apps. Opus for the smallest files at good quality. FLAC or WAV when you are going to edit the sound or archive it.

What bitrate should I choose for MP3?

192 kbps sounds identical to the original for almost all music. 128 kbps is plenty for podcasts and speech. 320 kbps is the maximum MP3 allows, for when file size doesn’t matter.

Will converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound?

No. The detail MP3 threw away is gone for good. WAV only stores what is left without further loss, which is useful for editing software but makes the file about ten times bigger.

Can I cut part of the audio while converting?

Yes. Open Advanced and set a start and end time in seconds. Leave both at 0 to convert the whole file. A Trim Audio tool with a waveform to drag is on the way.

Is it safe to convert private recordings here?

Yes. The audio never leaves your device. You can switch off your internet connection after the page loads and it still works.
