Should you convert SVG to APNG?

A safe conversion when APNG is what you need: both SVG and APNG keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

Bear in mind APNG is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in every current browser and Telegram stickers; most image editors show only the first frame.

SVG is a vector format made of shapes instead of pixels; APNG is a PNG that animates, with full color and soft transparency. Use APNG for small animated graphics on the web where GIF’s color banding or jagged edges would show.

What changes when SVG becomes APNG

Nothing is discarded

SVG and APNG both keep every pixel, so the picture survives the move intact. You can convert back and forth as often as you like without it degrading.

Transparency is kept

SVG and APNG both support transparency, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges come through unchanged.

Animation comes through

If the SVG is animated, every frame and its timing is copied into the APNG. APNG keeps full color, so it is usually larger than the same animation as GIF.

Pick the size you need

An SVG has no fixed pixel size, so it is drawn at the size you choose, 1024 pixels on the long side by default. For sharp results on high-resolution screens, use twice the size it will be shown at.

Expect a much larger file

APNG is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs APNG, not to send or store the file. SVG: A simple logo is often only a few KB. APNG: Larger than a GIF of the same animation, but in full color.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of SVG and APNG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • About the SVG. Converting a photograph to SVG does not turn it into vectors. Either the pixels get wrapped inside an SVG, which is bigger and no sharper, or a tracer turns it into flat blobs of color.
  • About the APNG. An APNG usually still ends in .png, so an upload form or editor treats it as a still picture and the animation silently disappears.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
