By Updated How we write these

The short answer

Post photos at 1080 × 1350 (4:5 portrait) for the most space in the feed, 1080 × 1080 for square, and 1080 × 1920 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. Reels of up to 3 minutes can be recommended to people who don’t follow you.

What Instagram crops

Instagram crops photos taller than its tallest shape or wider than 1.91:1, from the middle. The profile grid now shows posts at 3:4, so a 4:5 post loses a sliver at the top and bottom there. Keep faces and text away from the edges, or fit the whole picture inside the frame with a border using Resize Image.

Anything wider than 1080 pixels is shrunk to 1080 and compressed again by Instagram, so uploading larger gains nothing and costs you control over the result.

Questions

What is the best Instagram post size?

1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait): it takes up the most space in the feed. Square 1080 × 1080 and 3:4 1080 × 1440 also work well.

How do I post a full photo on Instagram without cropping?

Fit it inside a 4:5 or square frame with a border: Resize Image does it in one click, with a white or black border.

How long can an Instagram Reel be?

Instagram accepts longer Reels on many accounts, but only Reels up to 3 minutes are recommended to people who don’t follow you, so 3 minutes is the practical limit for reach.

What size is an Instagram Story?

1080 × 1920 pixels, 9:16. Keep text out of the top and bottom 250 pixels or so, where the profile name and reply bar sit.
