Press convert. If the picture only needs a new container it is copied in seconds; otherwise it is re-encoded on your device.
Why it doesn’t upload
Video files are big, and uploading one just to change its container can take longer than the conversion itself. Your browser can read and write these formats, so the file never has to leave your device.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM are handled by your browser’s own video engine, often with hardware help. AVI, WMV, FLV, MPG and the other older formats use the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download, and are slower.
- Only the first video track and the first audio track are kept. Subtitles and chapters are left out.
- Location and other metadata recorded by phones is not copied into the new file.
- Re-encoding a long 4K video on a phone can take a while. The progress bar shows the real time left.
Questions
Which video format should I convert to?
MP4 (H.264 and AAC) for anything that has to play on every phone, TV, PC and social app. WebM for video on your own website. MKV when you want to keep a high-quality copy. MOV for Final Cut and iMovie.
Does converting a video lose quality?
Not when the video can be copied. MOV and MKV files usually hold H.264 or HEVC already, so converting them to MP4 just moves the data into a new box. Re-encoding, which older formats need, loses a little; High quality keeps it invisible.
How do I convert MOV to MP4?
Drop the MOV file here with MP4 selected and press convert. iPhone and Mac recordings are copied without re-encoding, so it takes seconds. There is also a dedicated MOV to MP4 page.
My converted video won’t play on an old TV or PC. What now?
Open Advanced and turn on Always re-encode. That rebuilds the picture as H.264, which every player made in the last 15 years can decode.
Is there a file size limit?
No. The video is processed inside this tab, so the only limit is your device’s memory and patience. There is no upload, no queue and no daily cap.
