Why it doesn’t upload

Long videos are exactly the ones that take forever to upload, and they are usually personal: a family event, a lecture, a call. Here the file is read straight from your disk and cut in this tab, so a 2 GB recording is split in the time it would take just to start an upload.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • This tool uses the FFmpeg engine: a one-time 31 MB download, then it works offline.
  • Without “Cut exactly”, a part can only begin on a keyframe. Parts end on the last keyframe before the mark, so they come out up to a second or two shorter than asked — never longer — unless a video has keyframes very far apart, which the result will point out.
  • With “Cut exactly” the parts are re-encoded as H.264 MP4, which is far slower than copying. In our test a 5-second 1440p phone clip took about 45 seconds on a laptop — roughly ten times its length — and a phone is slower still.
  • The parts are held in memory until you save them. A phone can run out on a video of several gigabytes; a laptop copes.

Questions

How do I split a long video for WhatsApp Status?

Drop the video here, leave the length on 60 seconds and press Split it. Each part ends on the last keyframe before the minute, so none is longer than 60 seconds, and they are numbered in order so you can post them one after another. WhatsApp’s own help pages now give 90 seconds for a status, but older versions of the app still stop at 60 — so 60 works everywhere.

How do I split a video into equal parts?

Choose Into equal parts and set how many. Without re-encoding, each cut moves to the nearest keyframe, so the parts can differ by a second or so. If they must be identical to the frame, turn on Cut exactly.

Does splitting a video reduce its quality?

No. The picture and sound are copied into the new files exactly as they were — nothing is compressed again — which is also why it is fast. Only Cut exactly re-encodes, at a high quality setting.

Why is one part a second shorter than I asked?

A video is stored as full pictures (keyframes) every second or two, with changes in between. A copy has to start each file on a keyframe, so the cut moves back to the nearest one. Turn on Cut exactly to cut anywhere, at the cost of re-encoding.

Will there be a watermark?

No. Nothing is added to the picture, and there is no account or limit on how many videos you split.

Can I split a video on my phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone. The first split downloads the 31 MB engine once; after that it works offline. Very large files are more comfortable on a laptop, because the parts are kept in memory until you save them.
