Video to GIF

Choose a few seconds of a video and turn them into a looping GIF. The colors are picked from your own clip, so the quality is as high as a GIF can manage.

Lower is smaller and choppier. 10 to 15 looks smooth for most clips.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Add your file

Drop a video. It plays right here so you can find the moment you want.

  2. 02

    Check the settings

Drag the handles to choose up to a minute, then pick the width and frame rate. The size estimate updates as you go.

  3. 03

    Save the result

Press make GIF and save it. It loops, plays without sound and works in every app and browser.

Why it doesn’t upload

Making a GIF from a clip of your own video shouldn’t mean uploading the whole video first. The frames are picked and encoded on your device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • GIF allows only 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients and skies can look banded. A palette is built from your clip to keep that as mild as possible.
  • GIFs have no sound.
  • GIFs are large. Five seconds at 480 px and 12 fps is usually 1 to 4 MB; busy footage is bigger. An MP4 of the same clip is a tenth of the size, if the place you are posting accepts video.
  • Converting uses the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

How do I make a GIF smaller?

Lower the width first; it has the biggest effect. Then lower the frame rate to 10 and shorten the clip. Halving the width makes the GIF roughly four times smaller.

What is the best frame rate for a GIF?

10 to 15 fps looks smooth for most clips and keeps the file reasonable. Use 20 to 30 fps only for short, fast action, where the extra frames are worth the size.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIF can show only 256 colors in each frame. Footage with gradients, skin tones or low light has to be dithered to fit, which shows up as fine grain. That’s the format, not the converter.

Can I turn a GIF back into a video?

Yes. GIF to Video converts it to MP4 or WebM, which is usually 80 to 95 percent smaller.
